Most people would get a pet bird because they thought that they are low-maintenance pets.Unfortunately for them, they would come across the truth that birds are not like that. Like any other animals, birds would need social and physical attention from their owners. There are studies showing pet birds developing behavioural problems because their owners neglect them.

How can you make your bird happy?

A healthy bird is a happy one. When caring for birds, it is important to take note of their diet, housing and other social needs. There are some bird owners, who were overwhelmed of their pet responsibilities that they either give up their pets or their pets escaped from their homes.

Here are some things to remember to make our little feathered companions happy.

Shelter and Cage

When choosing a cage for a pet bird, make that there should be enough room for them to move. It is ideal for small birds to have perches where they can hop to, while big birds should have enough room to spread their wings without touching the sides of the cage. Perches should also be in different sizes. This would remove any possibility of birds hurting their feet for staying in one position. The perches should also provide access to food and water.

There are also some bird toys which you can give to your birds. There are some bird toys which can come in very low prices or sometimes given away for free. It is just a matter of looking. You can also try providing some natural comfort to your birds. Like safe and edible plants and non-toxic wood inside the cage.

When choosing a location in your house where you can put the bird cage, keep the bird in a safe and quiet environment. Kitchen is a no-no. Cleaning and cooking fumes can get dangerous to birds. It is also important for birds to get direct sunlight. Similar to humans, birds also need vitamin D.

Cages should also be cleaned every day. You can use water and minimal amount of bleach to kill the bacteria.Move the bird in a safe place when you have decided to clean the cages. The cleaning fumes can be bad for the birds.

Nutrition and Grooming

Bird food is not solely bird seeds. Some of the pet owners think that bird seeds are just enough, but its incorrect , seeds as only diet may cause early death. Birds diet should include vegetables, fruits, grains and dairy food. Avoid processed meat and food with high sugar content.Avocadoes and chocolates should normally be avoided since these are having high sugar content. Constant fresh water should be supplied to birds.

Bathing opportunity should be provided to birds. There are different options, you can put a shallow dish where birds can take a bath. Some birds would prefer to be given a shower under a faucet or you can spray them with water. Bathing is important especially if the bird is suffering molting.

Birds also need to sleep. Make sure that the place where the cage can be silent and dark enough for the bird to sleep.

Socialization

Birds are social creatures.Keeping them out of the cage, you just watch them from time to time. You would also need to give them time to make them happy. There were studies that have showed that parrots being neglected by their owners developed behavioural problems like feather plucking.

You can put your birds cage in the family room where family members can frequently see the bird and spend time with it. Free flight also provides great health benefits to your bird. Even if the bird cage is big enough, it still does not provide enough physical stimulation and movement to your pet. You can stay with your pet and with your family in the family room. Not only do you get to spend time with your pet bird, you also get to spend time with your family.

Your birds not only served as feathered companions, for years they have played a great role in inspiring some of the most popular songs, movies, and even fashion. Pet birds do not just display their feathers for their owners and family but are also muses for works of art.

In the music industry, here are some popular songs about birds and what they were about:

Three Little Birds - this song was by Bob Marley and is a very upbeat tune that you would surely love listening to.

Blackbird the song popularized by Beatles defeated the usual misconception about blackbirds. Blackbirds are usually taken in a bad way but was used as a symbol of hope in this song.

Rockin Robin who would not know this song by Bobby Day? This popular song can be both enjoyed by you and your feathered friend.

Free as a Bird another Beatles song which refers to birds freedom.

Yellow Bird this song by Chris Isaak is full of emotions and is about being free and flying away from problems.

It seems that people cannot get enough out of birds, unsatisfied with songs about their flying ability and other characteristics, birds became subject of movies and documentaries.

The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill was released in 2003.This movie was a touching documentary of a rock musician who turned into a conure caretaker in San Francisco was directed by Judy Irving. This movie is great for bird and non-bird enthusiasts. In the documentary, not only did Mark Bittner help in preserving the flock of birds, these birds also helped him find his personal and professional path.

In 2005, the March of the Penguins guided us to a wonderful and educational world of emperor penguins.Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature for the year 2005 was won by this documentary. The penguins were dubbed as if they were talking themselves in the original French version of the documentary. In the American version, it was narrated by Morgan Freeman. This documentary is all about the survival of the emperor penguins in extremely hard condition.

Fictional bird movies would include Paulie (1998) and The Real Macaw (1997). Most of these fictional movies would be about the adventures and misadventures of birds and their pet owners, who are usually children.

Not only did our birds graced the silver screen but they were also features for some great photographs. Bird photography is one of the most popular kinds of nature photography. Bird photography, especially taking pictures of birds in the wild is very challenging.Bird photographers, besides knowing the technical aspect of taking pictures should also have the knowledge and understanding of the birds behaviour.

But domesticated birds can also post as models. You just have to know how to set up your background and engage your bird so you can easily them pictures. Just make sure when taking pictures to take several snap shots so that you can choose the best one.

Speaking of bird models, our avian friends have also served inspiration for some interesting fashion. Designer Caroline Baker has shown bird- inspired clothing in the Charleston Fashion Week last March 2009. She have referred to her fashion line, the Plumage Collection, as eco couture. The collection was consisted of 14 bird inspired outfits.

It looks like of feathered friends are not only pets after all. The next time we look at our pet bird, maybe they could serve as inspiration for us to make a work of art.

There are many ways to make your garden attractive to the birds. The best way is to provide them with a safe place to eat and the food they love. Bird feeders are ideal for providing food for them. They are really helpful to the birds during the winter when food is hard to find.

Attract different species by setting up feeding stations containing their favorite foods. Examples of speciality feeders include thistle feeders to hold the tiny thistle seeds that finches love. Tube feeders are very good to keep seeds dry and prevent it spilling out. Enjoy the sight of the birds feeding from your home by using a window feeder.

You can buy specially designed feeders for goldfinches, woodpeckers and hummingbirds. Put them close to your bird house in a safe place. Check the feeder regularly to make sure the food is dry and mold free. Regularly clean up spilled food as it will attract wasps, ants and other pests.

Feeding during the winter is most beneficial for wild birds but shortages occur during other seasons as well. Help the wild birds by providing food for them all through the year. Put out suitable food for fledglings during the breeding season as they can be severly affected by food shortages.

Put out pans of water or install a bird bath to provide a safe place for them to drink, preen and clean their feathers. Some birds prefer water at ground level, others prefer to bathe high above ground so provide this by placing container at different levels. Only shallowly fill water pans and do not place them close to bird feeders as wild birds need quiet to bathe and preen their feathers. Wild birds will be attracted to the sounds of running water. You can attract birds by placing a water dripper on your bird bath.

Providing a natural looking environment in your garden will enhance the sense of security for the birds. An area of the garden can be allowed to grow wild to make them an attractive place.

Dog Daycare Training Programs Provide A Very Useful Service To The Dog And His Master

Dog daycare training programs, believe it or not, are readily available and they actually can and do provide your dog with a number of benefits. Owners of dogs that live a very busy lifestyle and who cannot find time to take care of their pets in the course of a normal day are the ones that need to look for dog daycare training programs. Such programs can at least lift the sense of guilt in the mind of the dog owner who must be feeling very bad about not being able to provide suitable care for their pet.

Dog Daycare Training Began In California In 1987

The main benefit to opting for dog daycare training is that it benefits both the dog as well as his master. These kinds of programs have become quite common today. In fact, from the time of the first dog daycare facility in California in the year 1987 till the present a lot of water has flown beneath the bridge and it has led to a mushrooming of dog training facilities in all parts of the country.

The original dog daycare training facilities were begun by people that loved dogs and who understood that the dog needs to be cared for in much the same way as we care for our little children. This led to the development of dog daycare facilities that worked on a guiding principle that the aim of dog daycare training is to ensure that the dog is provided with safe environment in which to spend time and where he needs to also be given necessary training to ensure that he comes out the better for his experience in the facility.

Besides the obvious benefits to providing your dog with dog daycare training there are other benefits that too help to create a happier and better socialized animal. When your dog is allowed to play with fellow inmates at the dog daycare he will be kept interested and he can also give vent to his pent up energy and generally live a more contended life.

Most dog daycare training programs are conducted in large and open areas that are segregated to ensure that dogs of similar sizes and temperaments are allowed to stick together. A good dog training care center must provide the dog with a chance to become well socialized, happy and obedient. Other than that you need to look at certain factors before entrusting the care and training ofdogto such a center. Gather information about the number of dogs kept in the center at a particular period and the number of staffs to train the dog. Last but not least, you need to be satisfied that your dog will get proper and sufficiently nutritious food.

Taking Care Of A Small Dog In A Small Home

The ease of taking care of a small dogis dependent on how much time a person has. The responsibility of taking care of a small dog may seem lesser than taking care of a bigger dog but there is just a slight difference in this. Before bearing the responsibility of a dog without bothering his size one must be familiar of the work that is required in having a dog. A person living in a small home or apartment in the city will have the responsibility of taking care of a small dog in a limited space. This feat is easier with a small dog than a large one which is why a lot of city dwellers have smaller dogs than larger ones. Some dog owners even go through dog care training just to be able to meet the needs of their dog.

Basic Needs for Taking Care Of A Small Dog

The basic needs of a dog, no matter what size are food, water and shelter. Taking care of a small dog is easier since its basic needs are not as much as larger dogs. The food intake of a small apartment dog is basically a cup or two of dog food twice or three times a day. Water should be provided all the time and limiting water intake to limit urination might result to a thirsty, noisy dog when left alone. The dog owner should always give the small dog time to relieve itself before leaving it for the day. Morning and evening walk is required for small dogs after every meal.

And Then Some

While meeting the basic needs of the dog is one of the main aspects of taking care of a small dog, there are other things that a dog owner must provide in order to raise a healthy and well balanced dog. Exercise is something that all dogs need although the degree of exercise is dependent on the breed of dog. Daily walks to relieve itself may not count as exercise since the dog owner may be in a hurry to fully walk the dog and return it to the apartment or home after it has done its business. A run is an integral part of taking care of a small dog. This run can be done once or twice a week just to exercise the dog. Other needs that are part and parcel of taking care of a small dog or any size dog, for that mater, is the love and affection that most of these companion dogs are hungry for.

Small Dog Hair Care Tips

Small dog hair care is somewhat the same as hair care for larger dogs. The fact of the matter is that dog hair care has the same principles whatever size the dog may be. Small dog hair care tips always focus on the comfort and well being of the dog. It may seem unhygienic for many dog ownersbut dogs usually need baths just a few times in a month, not even once a week. Of course when they are extraordinarily dirty or smelly, they will need a bath immediately for the well being of the owners. Shampoo should not be the same as humans since dogs have a different ph composition.

Small Dog Hair Care Tips For Short Haired Variety

Small dog hair care for short haired varieties is relatively basic. They need a brush all over on regular basis. The short haired varieties of small dogs usually have no problems when it comes to tangles and matted hair. Parasites are visible if the dog’s coat is close to its body and short. Small dog hair care for the varieties with short hair also includes the wiping of the face if there is discharge from the eyes as well as the maintenance of their feet and nails. Clipping is not part of small dog hair care for short haired dogs.

Small Dog Hair Care Tips For Long Haired Variety

Small dog hair care for long haired varieties includes trimming, cutting and dangling for most of the long haired varieties. Brushing is something that is a must when taking care of a small dog with longer hair. This will help to minimize the occurrence of tangled masses of hair which will eventually lead to matted hair. Matted hair can become painful when they pull the skin. Cutting the matted hair is usually the solution for extremely matted hair while careful combing and brushing might work for tangled hair.

Using a shampoo that can help to maintain the condition of the silky hair can help to reduce tangles and matting. Small dog hair care also means that the owner or the care taker of the dog will have to follow up the dog’s hair when it has been outdoors. Small dogs that are closer to the ground have a decided tendency of picking up strays or parasites.

Daycare For A Small Dog: What To Look Out For

Daycare for a small dog may be necessary at times when there is nobody to take care of it for a certain period of time daily. In a daycare for a small dog the dog is kept in a kennel or a dog companion for hours of the day and then taken away. Lots of causes are there for utilizing a daycare for a small dog. One of these reasons is that there is nobody left at the home to take care of the small dog for a particular reason. There are also kennels where dogs are left overnight for a night or several nights. There are certain aspects of a daycare for small dogs which the owner needs to check out before leaving the dog behind. These aspects should be checked in order to ensure the safety and health of the dog.

Safety And Daycare For A Small Dog

The safety of a daycare for a small dog must be checked before leaving the dog behind. The dog owner is entitled to check the kennel or the daycare for factors that may be a demerit to the kennel or daycare regarding the safety, health and well being of the small dog. Possible things that may make the daycare for a small dog unsafe are electrical outlets and wires which are exposed and readily accessible to the dogs, sharp or pointed ends of the cages or beds which have the potential to harm the dogs, bigger dogs which are not friendly and many other factors that the dog owner might notice which have the potential for danger.

Well Being And Daycare For A Small Dog

The daycare for a small dog should also have workers who really care for dogs and like them. The dog owner has the option to observe and tour the facilities of the kennel or daycare for small dogs in order to get an impression of this. The caretakers of the dogs should be able to understand the dogs needs and fulfill these. Some smaller dogs are more timid than others and these should not be just left alone but also encouraged to mingle with other dogs as well as with the people who run the daycare for small dogs. Small dog hair care facilities and props may be included in the kennel or daycare for a small dog. Many smaller dogs have problems with their hair grooming and the owners may not be able to do this due to time constraints. Caretakers should be ale to facilitate the grooming of the dogs upon the request of the owners.

Let’s discuss the breed standard of the popular and gorgeous Lhasa Apso shall we?

The Lhasa Apso is shown in the Non-Sporting Dog group, and is easily recognized by their distinctive coat and the medium small stocky body.

The average Lhaso Apso weighs between thirteen and fifteen pounds or six to seven kilograms.

While there are some slight variations between different judging bodies, the following is a guideline for the Lhasa Apso breed standards, based on the information provided by the American Kennel Club.

HEAD

* The skull is narrow and falls away from behind the ridge of the eyebrow in a marked degree. The skull is not flat but is not domed or apple-shaped either.

* The foreface is straight and the muzzle is medium in length. A square shaped muzzle is objectionable.

* The nose should be black and the tip of the nose should be carried level with the slit of the lower eye rim when viewed from the front of the dog.

* There should be a heavy furnishing of hair over the eyes and a good set of whiskers and a beard.

* The ears should be pendant type and should have a heavy feathering of hair.

* The eyes are to be dark brown and of medium size. Overly large and full eyes or small and sunken eyes are objectionable.

* An overbite is not acceptable, and a slightly undershot or level bite is preferable. The desired bite is described as a reverse scissors with the upper incisors just touching the inside of the lower incisors. The teeth should not be showing while the mouth is closed.

NECK

* The neck is study and is well set on the shoulders. The neck should give an appearance of elegance to the carriage of the head.

BODY

* The length of the body should be longer than the height at the withers, when measured from the point of the shoulders to the point of the buttocks.

* The loin should be firmly muscled and not overly long.

* The ribs should extend well back along the body to provide balance and stance.

* The quarters and the thighs should be powerful and muscular and the abdomen should be tucked up at the loin.

* There is some variation in the size allowed, but males should not exceed 11 inches at the shoulder and females should not exceed 10 inches.

* All colors are acceptable, with mixtures and variations of colors with white. There may be darker markings on the edges of the ears and the beard.

* The coat should be long, but not touching the ground. It should be very thick and dense on the body, head and not overly coarse or silky to the touch. It is to be completely straight with no curl. The legs should be completely covered and the hair should grow between the toes.

* The legs should be as straight as possible with no bowing or crookedness. Due to the heavy coat and stout appearance, the leg bone will appear to be heavy but is not in reality.

* The pads of the feet should be large and almost cat-like in appearance.

For anything to do with Lhasa Apso Puppies for Sale It is always worthwhile taking the time to find out the most effective information you can.

TAIL

* The tail of the Lhasa Apso should be curved over the backbone in a screw.

* The tail may have a slight kink at the end, and this is acceptable.

* The hair on the tail should be well feathered and should be thick and dense.

* A low carriage of the tail is not acceptable in this breed.

GAIT

* The Lhasa Apso should move gracefully and forcefully, with a trot being the normal gait.

* The pads should be lifted off the ground and should be able to be seen as the dog is moving away.

* This dog has been bred for working in the mountains on rough and difficult terrain so speed is not important, rather the purposeful movement is.

CHARACTER

* The terms used in the breed standards are gay and assertive but wary of strangers. The Lhasa Apso is lively, intelligent and devoted to their owners.

* They are a good watch dog as they are naturally wary of new people but should be very loyal companions of family members and familiar people.

I am sorry if that was all a bit “dry” but it is a little tricky to make the breed standards exciting.

Thanks for visiting us and we hope you enjoyed learning a little about the breed standard of the Lhasa Apso.

Feeding the dogs these days is not a simple matter, and there are innumerable choices available in the markets. It is not as simple as eating the table food waste to your pet any more, as owners are now witting that this can lead to various health problems because the food eaten by human beings is not always desirable for dogs. It is essential to choose the right dog food, suitable as per the breed, age and size of your pet.

Choosing The Right Dog Food

These days, we are more aware of the chemical additives being used in the pet foods, and their dangerous effects on pets health. The pet owners now realize that healthy pet needs healthy diet, which is free from additives and chemicals. This can be quite difficult at times because most of the brands of dog food have coloring or preservatives in order to increase the shelf life, and to make it look more attractive. But, there are certain brands of dog food that provide the nutritional balance to the dogs, and can also be given to allergy sufferers.

If you visit the pet store to buy dog food, you will find hundreds of different kinds of foods out there, and choosing the best one for your dog becomes a difficult task. You must prefer the dog food carefully so that it is able to provide all the nutrients needful for maintaining a sound and happy favourite.

Most of the people love their pets as their kids, and love them unconditionally. They feel that it is their responsibility to ensure that their pets are well taken care of. The best way to make sure that your dog gets the best food is to prepare the dog food at home. Dogs have certain nutrient requirements, and most veterinarians feel that homemade food is best for your pet. If your dog is on the commercial food, make the change gradual so that digestive upsets can be avoided.

Never feed bones to your dog as they can get lodged in their digestive tracts. It is also advisable to avoid giving chocolates, avocados, onions, nuts, raisins, grapes and garlic. You can make dog food at home based off the sources of protein like fish, eggs, pork, lamb, beef, pheasant, chicken and so on. Add carbohydrates like barley, oats, quinoa, or wheat germ to the meat. The healthy dog food must be served at the room temperature, and adult dogs must be given one meal a day.

If you want to feed the readymade dog food to your pet, compare all the premium brand foods in term of ingredients. Good brands of pet foods always have pure meat product as the first ingredient. There are certain premium foods that are high in protein and have very less filler content as compared to dry dog foods. Some of the canned dog foods have no grains, but only protein. These foods can adversely affect dogs health as their digestive system is not designed to digest the large quantities of protein. You must choose the dog food that provides a good mixture of whole grains and meat such as potato, eggs, fish, beef liver, broth and carrots.

More and more people these days are opting for natural organic dog food. Whether you are going for the organic dry dog food or the canned moist food, make sure that it is safe and healthy for your pet. Buying the organic dog food is definitely going to cost you more, but the benefits of this food will far outweigh the disadvantage of it being expensive. You can hunt for the coupons to get great discounts on natural organic dog food so that you get it at the best possible price. When choosing the dog food, just keep in mind that each breed of dog has its unique nutritional requirements that also vary as per size and age. If you are not sure, talk to the vet or read some books about dog food and care.

People adopt pet birds for different reasons. There may be some who find feathered friends extremely relaxing and love the colourful plumage. While, there are others who take interest on the ability of some birds to adapt human language.

Pet birds can be both those common and domesticated breeds of birds. People have taking care of birds since three to four centuries ago. These birds graced numerous kingdoms and palaces before it entered out living rooms.

So, if you are thinking of getting a feathered friend and unsure about what to pick out, there are some considerations that you have to think about. This would include ability to handle additional financial obligations and taking care of a pet. Birds are not easy maintenance pets, unlike what most people think. These animals ar social and they need attention from their owners. How long these birds can live when you know, you can get surprised!

If you have fully considered taking care of a bird but indecisive of what kind you can take care of, here are some information about the most popular bird choices:

Parakeets this bird can also be called a Budgerigar or sometimes Budgies. If you are just a starting bird owner, these birds are ideal they are sociable towards each other and to humans. Their size range from small to medium making it easier to care for compared with big birds. Their life expectancy is about 12 to 14 years. But they tend to be noisy sometimes and destructive of their surroundings.

Cockatiels - are birds members of the parrot family making them capable of learning human words. You will really enjoy their company as these are pretty much advanced in their singing and whistling capabilities. They are also very much capable of copying sounds like a car alarm, ringing phone or other bird calls. There are different colors for these birds and can live up between 15 to 20 years.

Canaries- are also very popular birds. Those pet owners who is unable to spare more time and pay required attention this kind of bird is ideal for them. These birds pay little attention to humans and prefer to live in small flocks.Approximately 10 years would be their life span. Whats great about canaries is that they sing beautifully. Male canaries have richer voices than females.

Lovebirds these birds are ideal if you live in a place where you are very close to neighbours who do not want too much bird noise. They can be very quiet and can live up to 20 years. They are also part of the parrot family. Some pet owners would rather have a single lovebird rather than a usual pair, so that the bird can bond more with the owner than the other bird.

African greys- are said to be the most intelligent of the birds, especially in terms of their vocabulary. This intelligence is why it is important for an African Grey to have a lot of stimulating toys around their cage. These kind of birds can live up to 50 to 70 years.

But not all pet owners are happy with having domesticated pet birds. There are pet owners who prefer exotic birds which are usually from countries in Asia, Africa or Australia. Most of pet owners would choose birds from the parrot family since they would have very delightful colors and can show supreme intelligence.

But when importing birds from other countries, there are important regulations and rules which should be followed. Smuggling birds in countries can have an effect on the number of birds in their natural habitat (which sometimes lead to endangerment) and worse health for the birds and humans too.

Serious diseases happened in the United States because of failure in undergoing the proper procedure for bringing exotic and wildbirds in the country. Examples of these diseases would be avian flu or the exotic Newcastle Disease.

When bringing in a bird in the country, make sure that you birds have been checked by veterinarians and avian experts for diseases. They should have a health certificated from the veterinarian and at the same time the permit issued by the government. Most cases of aviary disease and their outbreak can be traced to birds who have entered the country by illegal means.

There are many options when picking out the right pet bird for you. Regardless of its breed, size, or appearance, the most important thing is to take into consideration is that they would be around for a while. So make sure to pick the bird that you can enjoy, because they are not just commodities that you can throw away if you no longer want them to be around.
