The Mapes Hotel in Reno, Nevada met its demise on Superbowl Sunday of 2000 when 75 pounds of explosives packed inside the structure’s support columns brought it to the ground. The controlled demolition came despite years of effort by a number of groups within the community to preserve the building with lawsuits, redevelopment proposals, and grass roots lobbying efforts. The National Trust for Historic Preservation even took up the cause, challenging the destruction in a lawsuit that eventually reached the Nevada Supreme Court.

While the logic and necessity of demolishing the Mapes is very questionable, one thing that is certain is that the hotel was an important part of Northern Nevada history. The opening of the Mapes in’47 ushered in a new era in casino gambling, and changed the economy and way of life in Nevada forever. The Mapes was actually the first property in the country to combine a hotel, casino and live entertainment under the same roof. It also became the hotel of choice for celebrities staying in Northern Nevada. Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe stayed at The Mapes during the filming of ‘The Misfits’. Joseph McCarthy, America’s famed anti-Communist crusader, admitted to a reporter over cocktails in the Mapes Lounge that he really didn’t have a list of Communists in the US despite his frequent and vitriolic insistence to the contrary.

During the ‘Rat Pack’ era of the 50′s and 60′s it became along with the Cal-Neva Lodge in Lake Tahoe the place to be seen in Northern Nevada. The 11th floor, window walled Sky Room Lounge hosted performances by a roster of entertainment legends including Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., Dean Martin, Louis Prima, Keely Smith, Milton Berle and Mae West. Downtown Reno struggled during the’60′s and 70′s but the Mapes continued to prosper. The hotel finally closed in’82, due to financial problems experienced by the Mapes Family brought about by their other Northern Nevada casino holdings.

While the last twenty years brought an amazing boom in the population and economy of Southern Nevada, the Northern part of the state didn’t see much of it at all. For that reason, the urgency of destroying the Mapes is even more questionable. In the Las Vegas area, its easy to justify the demolition of older hotels with simple economics–the older properties simply can’t compete in the current mega-resort dominated marketplace. Furthermore, the insane valuation of the land on which they sit makes it financially unfeasible to preserve them as pop culture museums.

This is not the case in Reno, where land and buildings for development in virtually every casino area are abundant. The official reason that the Mapes had to come down was that the city needed the land–which sits along the banks of the Truckee River–to expand its riverside district of art galleries, restaurants and shops. The revitalization of downtown Reno is definitely needed and a legitimate goal, but at the same time it is hard to think that the Mapes was a barrier to this. Indeed, a number of proposals for redevelopment including office space, artists lofts and upscale senior housing would have probably served to enhance the livability of the downtown area. For whatever reason, the City Redevelopment Authority wouldn’t approve any of the proposals and the fate of the Mapes was sealed.

The role of the City Redevelopment Authority was questioned throughout the process. Overlooking the Truckee River, the hotel was on a prime location between the downtown casino area and the riverfront district. A number of sound financial proposals were presented that would preserve the integrity of the structure including condominiums, office space, and perhaps most viable, upscale senior apartments. Oddly, all of these proposals were turned down by the citys Redevelopment Agency which continued to maintain that demolition was the only viable option despite copious evidence to the contrary.

Following the 2000 demolition, the lot remained vacant for over a year until a temporary ice skating rink was hastily constructed the following winter. The property has been improved and the rink is now permanent which, while not in itself a bad use for the land, further calls into question the efficacy of demolishing the structure. It would appear that the city had no clue what to do with the land, but for whatever reason wanted the building brought down. This has led to all sorts of conspiracy theories, from the City Development Agency having financial incentive to raze the hotel to rumors that the building was haunted and was destroyed to keep the Reno area from being overrun with paranormal activity. Whatever the reason for the decision, the city of Reno has lost a beautiful art deco treasure that played a significant part in the economic growth of the state.

Pros and Cons of Air Travel

The popularity of air travel has been increasing in the past few decades. Air travel is convenient and safe and these are the main reasons that have contributed to the increase in popularity of air travel. The following are some of the positive and negative factors involving air travel.

Disadvantage: Airplanes Cause Pollution.

The biggest drawback for traveling by air is the pollution. Airplanes are responsible for sending greenhouse gases into our atmosphere and these gases contribute for things like global warming. For those people that try to limit their impact on the planet this could be a serious drawback. ) Many airlines are trying to become more environmentally conscious these days. This can include them retrofitting their airplanes with a device called a winglet which improves fuel efficiency. In addition, most of the airlines have been modernizing their aircraft to more fuel efficient aircraft by spending a lot of money thereby reducing the emission of greenhouse gases.

Disadvantage: High Cost

High cost of travel makes many people avoid traveling by air. It is frequently much less expensive to fuel up the car and drive to where you need to go instead of flying. By flying on discount
airline it is possible to overcome this disadvantage of high cost. If you can find a good deal for airfare it can be the deciding factor for many people whether they will fly or drive.

Disadvantage: Fear of Flying

Many people simply do not like to fly. This is mainly because of the fact that they were on a flight that has experienced extreme turbulence or some type of other event and this has been rather terrifying.

Advantage: Speed of Travel

traveling by air is much faster as compared to other means of transportation as long as these places are connected by air. While it can take days to drive across the United States, a person can fly the same distance in a number of hours. The savings obtained in this mode of air travel gives you an opportunity to enjoy your vacation for a longer period.

Advantage: Easy to Travel Long Distances

It is possible to cover long distances by flight in a reasonably short time whereas it is difficult to cover far off destinations by other modes of transportation. Air travel to practically any destination in the world is possible. Although many of these flying times are very long you will still find that the total time taken is much shorter than the time that would have been spent by using alternate modes of transportation.

Advantage: Safety

When you consider various modes of travel, you will find that travel by air is the safest. Car accidents wherein people die happen in thousands every year. On the other hand you find that the occurrence of train accidents is also quite common. Air travel related disasters do happen but they occur much less frequently. Decision making on the mode of travel has been very easy for many people who consider safety as the main factor for opting to fly.

Choosing air travel is a personal decision, based on the factors discussed above along with a multitude factors not discussed here. For most travelers safety, speed of travel and cost are the over riding factors. As long as cost remains affordable air travel will continue to grow in popularity.

When you go camping in New England between the months of September and November you should be prepared to see some of the most immaculate scenery images in the world. Whether you have ever previously witnessed the changing leaves in any of these historically rich and naturally beautiful states or you are just looking for the best campsites ever, this is the trip for you.

Be prepared to meet some of the nicest and friendliest locals you will ever find. New England is a place where the rest of the world is welcome to visit, learn, and partake of the lifestyle that is most definitely uniquely country and steeped long in tradition. Camping in New England is like taking a tour of some of the most impressively important areas within our country.

There are simple fairs, like pumpkin festivals and sheep and wool festivals to all out Oktoberfest fairs that bring out the beer drinker in all of us. Much of New England still experiences the country life, and their country fairs are a tribute to the simple life that brings about good times.

Of course, there is plenty of crystal clear fall fishing to take up a weekend or a two week tour of these small states. Outdoor sports are part of a ling heritage within the New England borders, and those that get to participate in them do so respectfully and in awe of the natural wonders that still allow then to carry on the pride of their ancestors.

Be prepared to spend some time getting to know Mother Nature. Camping in New England offers the outdoor lover a treat from the scenery to the adventures. Fishing, canoeing or kayaking, and hiking are just a few basic examples of the lifestyle waiting for you.

Be prepared to deal with some unexpected weather. While New England is absolutely gorgeous in the fall months it is also relatively easy to find yourself experiencing a quick and harsh change in the weather.

Cold fronts can move quickly, and while the autumn months are a time for change to happen quickly, New England autumns can bring drastic changes from one day to the next. It is possible to experience a twenty degree drop in temperature in just an hour as a fast moving front paves the way. Keeping in touch with the weather report and being prepared for the possibility of overnight frost is just one more way to be prepared when camping in New England.

It is common for people to think they understand what car hire is all about. It is only when things go wrong that people realize how little they know about car hire. In this article you will find some advice about car hire.

The first thing to think about is the size of the car as this will impact greatly on fuel costs and consumption. Another thing to think about is the the type of journey that you will be taking and the number of people who will be using the car. Smaller cars will be suitable for two or four people on a normal routine journey. They are cheaper and low on fuel consumption.

The kind of roads that you will be using, If you are going to be traveling long distances on rough terrain then go for a high suspension car. Another thing is if you can schedule your journey to be mid-week then its better than over the weekend or holidays. Different rates apply for the week days and the weekends.

It maybe time consuming but please do read the rental lease agreement closely and in detail. Each agency has its own set of rules that are different from those of another. Once you are sign you are legally bound to the conditions stated therein and cannot claim ignorance as a defense.

The eligibility of drivers is another thing that you should be aware of. Extra drivers can be put on the lease but for an extra fee. If you are traveling with children there are conditions that are also stated in relation to this.

You could actually pick from any one of the following reputable car hire agencies: budget car rental cape town car hire bloemfontein airport car rental rondebosch

When renting a car make sure you understand the risk that you carry and the risk that is covered by the car rental company. It is always better to be sure than to assume.

Just reserve a tour, interact with the staff working in the mine environment and you will experience that there is a true desire to reclaim the land in a beautiful manner rather than unattractive ugly piles of residue waste.

To protect the new growth revegetation and reclamation desire effort, Rosemont Copper Company has established a 30,000 acre working cattle ranch about 30 miles south of Tucson, Arizona. The ranch operation is professionally managed by Tom Kay and he will superivise a herd of five hundred to 550 beef cattle. The Rosemont ranch has no dairy cows. Tom has years of ranching experience and enjoys being a cowboy, working to keep the cattle, equipment and environment all functioning in tip top order. He knows that we need copper to function today but he also knows that beauty in the region needs to be portected. The operational plans of the company accomplish this with their vision, approach, plans and promises.

Rosemont will be using the newest in natural, non-confined ranching managment ways. Rosemont livestock will be raised in nature environmentally friendly operations with no hormones, no antibiotics and they will be completely range fed.

The revegetation has been studied with the help of the University Of Arizona College Of Natural Resources. They were done to find the most suitable plant species for the revegetation following the mining process. The twenty-nine seeds selected have a resilient and productive system and are currently available from large-scale commercial seed suppliers and meet the NRCSs ecological site description.

The cattle operations are critical to assist in the process of growing and reproducing the seeds. Since seeds do better if mixed into the soil so they dont parch in our desert heat or blow away in our wind so the cattle hooves can push the seed into the soil. The munching of the cattle creates textured soil which helps retain water and nutrients.

Not only that but the chewing helps to stimulate the growth not only with them grazing but also by walking on weeds and chewing up weed flowers. Of course the manure creates benefits of fertilizing the land which helps even in the poor growth areas where an abundance of manure increases microorganisms and ads to the soil fertility.

Rosemont Copper has been actively assisting a number of local groups with their fundraising events. They have benefited in a number of activities such as supplying not only financial assistance but also providing the cow for the Cienega Rotary “Cow Pie Bingo” event where funds help in both local and international projects.

Rosemont Copper offers free weekly tours of the location that include visits to the geology exploration camp, the historic mining areas, the old quarry, and the weather station. Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9 to noon. This tour will be not only a wonderful opportunity to see the Arizona Mountains and desert but also to learn about the value of copper to our development. Without copper we probably would not have electricity or would not have a space program. Its necessary to mine this mineral in the most environmentally friendly manner possible and Rosemont Copper Mine is working toward succeeding in this and establishing the standard for the rest of the world!

You can arrange for your Rosemont Copper Mine tour by calling Phone: (520) 343-1730 or by going to the ad on www.arizonabeautiful.com and going to the Tucson attractions region.

Berlin City Hotel

Berlin is perhaps the most interesting travel destination in Europe right now. The reason why is that it’s a city still in the process of inventing itself – it’s definitely a city on the move.

Since the reunification of East Berlin, this city has been undergoing a huge change, reinventing itself. East Berlin is favored now by trendy young people, though it of course was previously blocked off from the rest of the city via the Berlin Wall. And what does this mean for travelers to Berlin?

It means that all you have to do is to book a stay in a Berlin city hotel, and you then have a large, fascinating and adventurous city to explore. Take the time to read through our short list of recommendations for things to do in Berlin.

Be sure to check out Berlin’s exclusive “shopping mall”, Kurfrstendamm (known to the locals as “Ku’damm”).

Consider having a drink in one of Berlin’s trendy Beach Bars in the summer months. These are bars built on the River Spree or one of the Canals flowing through Berlin that use sand to create a real on-the-beach feeling, in the middle of the city!

Take a bus tour and a boat tour of Berlin.

Be sure and take a stroll around Alexanderplatz, which was one of the main shopping areas of East Berlin.

Consider dining or going for a drink at the restaurant at the top of the “Fernsehturm” or TV Tower that is located near Alexanderplatz.

Be sure and view the Branderburg Gate, a large decorative gateway located on the elegant street named Unter den Linden.

Whatever you do – don’t forget to snack on a Currywurst. If you like sausage, be sure to taste a Currywurst – this is a kind of local snack made popular in Berlin.

Winters in Berlin can frankly be long, cold and somewhat dark. For this reason we advise you to plan your trip so that you can enjoy this city in either the spring, summer or fall seasons. One benefit of the long winters in Berlin is that Berliners are typically in a kind of party mood when the weather is nice, which is another good argument for visiting this city in the middle of summer.

When you look for a Berliner hotel, make sure that you choose one of the city hotels in Berlin. Although the public transportation system in Berlin is excellent, you truly want to be located somewhere where the action is, and preferably very close to one of the many subway stations located downtown.

We hope these tips will help you plan for a possible visit to downtown Berlin, one of Europe’s most vibrant cities!

There are only 3 main flights from Miami to Cape Town South Africa. These are The South African Airways, Delta Airlines and British Airways. None of them offer a direct flight as they all have to stop at least twice before reaching their destination.

The routes of some of these flights includes via Washington, New York,Baltimore and Johannesburg. With each stop you have to switch flights but this is normal for long flights.

South African Airways

Destined for South Africa it leaves Miami at 13.25hrs and makes its first stop in Washington Dulles arriving at around 16.05hrs. After stopping for about 1 hrs it leaves for Johannesburg where it is scheduled to arrive at 15.50hrs the next day.

It then lives Johannesburg at 17:40 and flies to its final destination, Cape Town. It gets there at 19:50. The air flight to South Africa from Miami is about 20 hours long.

Delta Airlines

Delta Airlines lives Miami at 06:00 and flies to Baltimore. It arrives there at 10:34 and takes off at 11:00 heading to New York, specifically to the JFK airport. Its scheduled to arrive at 12.10hrs and leave New York at 16.00hrs for Cape town.

This flight is longer than the South African Airways i.e. it’s a 23 hour flight.

British Airways

British Airways will leave Miami heading for London at 20.50hrs and will arrive the next day at 10.05hrs. There is quite a long stretch of waiting here as the new flight that you are switched to only takes off at 17:50 and flies to Johannesburg

It gets there at 06:35 on the second day. The connecting flight to Cape town will leave at 09.00hrs and arrive at 11.10hrs. The total time for this journey is 2hrs better than the Delta Airlines time, it is 21 hrs.

If you are going to be comparing prices then South African Airways comes out as the cheapest. For the latest in airfares and how you can make your travel bookings check out any of the following:
